The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga has advised today’s leaders to emulate former Katikkiro Martin Luther Nsibirwa, who selflessly served his people till his death.

Nsibirwa was shot dead at St. Paul’s Cathedral 70 years back.

Speaking as a guest at the thanksgiving service to commemorate 70 years since he was murdered, Mayiga said that Nsibirwa was a leader with a vision and fought hard to see that the subjects he led developed.

Nsibirwa was the Katikkiro of Buganda during Daudi Chwa and Edward Mutesa’s reign.

Dr. Martin Aliker and wife were among the congregants attending the service at Namirembe . “If 70 years down the road we are still remembering Nsibirwa, then we appreciate the great works he did then.

"Leadership means creating a way of developing the people you lead and at that time, the subjects did not know or support him, but we are still enjoying his fruits,” said Mayiga.

Nsibirwa is remembered for his role in seeing that Makerere University got land, years after giving up his land for Mulago Hospital to build medical school residences.

He also ensured that he built offices at all Buganda county headquarters.

“He was a leader who had a foresight of what would benefit his subjects. When he was struggling to see that Makerere University got land, he did not know that the university could train presidents and future leaders but here we are, the products of a great institution,” said Mayiga, who  challenged today’s leaders to also emulate him and offer services that  will benefit the future generations.

“Even though he was murdered, he left something that we are proud about,” said Mayiga.

Retired Mityana Bishop Wilson Mutebi said that what Nsibirwa did was not beneficial to him alone but he put the country, Buganda, his subjects ahead before his family, though he always created time for it.

“Despite his life being a great challenge, he always got time and he was the leader of the family altar. He ensured that he created time to see to the upbringing of his children.

Maria Kiwanuka, who spoke on behalf of the grand children and Rhoda Nsibirwa Kalema, who spoke on behalf of the children, all, noted a loving and family person, who, fought to unite the family.
