DP targets 50 MP seats in 2016 polls

PARLIAMENT has a total of 386 MPs and of these, the ruling NRM party has 259, Independents account for 43, FDC has 37, DP 15, and UPC 10

THE Democratic Party (DP) Buganda region vice president, Betty Nambooze, has said DP targets to win over 50 seats for MPs countrywide to compete favorably with other political parties in Parliament come 2016.

 

“DP targets to front over 50 seats of MPs in parliament come 2016 to compete favorably with other political parties; this will help DP have numerical strength in the House.” Nambooze said.

 

Nambooze made the remarks over the weekend where 50 DP flag bearers who won the party’s grassroots elections in Mukono district were flagged off at St. Paul Catholic Church. 

 

Parliament has  a total of 386 MPs and of these, NRM has 259, Independents account for 43,  Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) 37, Democratic Party 15, Uganda People’s Congress 10, Justice Forum (JEEMA ) and Conservative Party with one MP.

 

The DP leaders also warned the party flag bearers to work hard to enable the party win many elective posts.

 

The party National Chairman Baswale Kezaala warned DP flag bearers not to risk working for individual interests to gain wealth but to provide service to the community which will have voted them into office.

 

“When you join the local government, don’t expect to become rich overnight, government pays you little allowances and salaries” he noted.

 

Kezaala explained that government allocates municipalities sh2b annually, not enough for operational costs, including garbage collection, street lighting and cleaning and fuel for roads maintenance.

 

Busiro East MP Medard Ssegona said that DP party members should be ready to support one candidate with other opposition parties under The Democratic Alliance (TDA).

 

Ssegona said “In Africa, there is no opposition party that can win elections single handedly without support from other political parties.”

 

The party national treasurer Isa Kikungwe warned the party members against infighting and causing division.

 

Luweero woman MP Brenda Nabukenya, Kalungu West MP, Joseph  Ssewungu and Busiro South MP Joseph Balikuddembe attended the function.
