President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to fallen internal affairs minister and former chief of defense forces (CDF) Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, saying his death is a "big loss" to the country.

Addressing mourners at Aronda’s home in Buziga in Kampala, the President said: "I received news of Gen. Aronda's death the other day when I arrived in India; my immediate thinking was maybe it was an accident. I didn't know he had any medical problem.

"Because when we came from the bush, many died of AIDS but Aronda was disciplined, he survived. He died on a plane coming from South Korea," said the President.

"We are busy finding the cause of his death, but that will not bring him back, it is very sad. Aronda together with few others helped us start afresh and rebuild the country. It is a big loss.

"He has made his contribution. It was an untimely death at 56 years. He helped with the ID Project, it was stuck but he moved it. From the people here, it shows who Aronda was."

Aronda, 56, died on Saturday in Dubai. The former army commander will be accorded a state funeral.

The body of Aronda will be brought on Wedneday at 1.00pm local time aboard The Emirates.

The body will be taken to Parliament on Thursday at 9.00am local time. Prayers will take place at Kololo grounds on Friday starting 9.00am, according to a burial program.

The remains of Gen Aronda will be then laid to rest on Saturday at Nyakiju in Rukungiri.
