An autopsy on the body of the fallen Minister of Internal Affairs, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, who died on Saturday aged 56, will be carried out Monday in Dubai.

The former army commander will be accorded a state funeral. President Yoweri Museveni is today scheduled to meet the bereaved family in Buziga, Kampala.

The spokesperson of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda said the team led by UPDF chief of medical services, Dr. James Makumbi, includes four pathologists, two Police experts and Jolly Ngabirano, the deceased’s sister.

“The team held talks with the officials from the United Arab Emirates Government and members of the delegation that had travelled to South Korea with Gen. Aronda. Their discussion entailed documentation to allow the autopsy on the body to start. Investigations are set to start today. We will keep the country posted,” Ankunda said.

On Saturday, in a televised interview, Akunda said the Kampala team that had rushed to Dubai included Gen. Aronda’s family doctor.

Ankunda added that the body is expected in the country Tuesday or Wednesday, although he did not say when the burial will take place. He said the funeral arrangements are in high gear.

The arrangements are being overseen by the committee set up to make the preparations. During a prayer vigil at Buziga, a relative of the deceased identified as Patrick Kabonero said the general’s body will arrive home Tuesday.

The vigil was led by Rev. Canon Masiko from All Saints Church, Nakasero. John Chrysestom Muyingo, the Minister of State for Primary Education, Johnson Byabashaija, the Commisioner General of Uganda Prisons Service and Gen. Pecos Kutesa, UPDF’s chief of military doctrine, commended Aronda’s good service and calm nature.

The Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda, said the Government has set up a task force, led by defence minister, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, to coordinate all matters relating to Aronda’s death.

Pamela Ankunda, the Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson, in a tweet on Saturday said prayers for the bush war historical will be held at Kololo Independence Grounds.

“And what a coincidence! On this very day in 2006, Gen. Aronda’s dad passed on. Dad and son on the same date. God’s ways are indeed not our ways,” Pamela said in the tweet.

She noted that members of the team that travelled with the minister are still in Dubai, helping with investigations. According to government officials, a waitress aboard the Emirates flight to Dubai found Gen. Aronda unconscious in his seat; he was travelling in the business class.

The minister was travelling from South Korea, in the company of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) executive director, Judith Obitre-Gama and NIRA board chairman, John Kasesene.

The minister’s aide, whose name was not given, was also on the same flight.
