Uganda Professional Golf Association captain Deo Akope could be on his way to winning one of East Africa's biggest professional golfing events after opening up a two-stroke lead after two rounds at the Nyali Golf Club in Mombasa on Thursday.

Akope who shot an opening round of two-under-par 69 to lead the strong field of 66 professionals, followed it with 73 for a total of 142 on the second day, not only to make the cut but also to remain top going into the third round action on Friday.

"Golf is all about being patient and having self-belief in yourself; despite not playing well in the Uganda Open I knew it wasn't the end of my career and had to move on. I'm happy with the way I'm playing, it is not over but I will give it my all," Akope said.

Akope is not new to the windy course where he once, even equaled the course record of 66 gross set by Wachira Mahihu in 1992.
