Joyce Nyakato, a former features writer at New Vision passed on Wednesday at the Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC.

Nyakato is said to have been diagnosed with three brain tumours in July this year. Though non-cancerous, the tumours were growing in highly sensitive locations of the brain.

According to her aunt, Alice Nyangoma, the deceased had been hospitalized since August and her condition kept on deteriorating. She reportedly complained of an incessant headache and body pains.

“She was such a strong lady that until a week ago, she was sure all will be alright. She trusted the doctors to do a good job. But God planned otherwise.”

It is barely two months after she celebrated her 29th birthday but also just three months after Nyakato graduated with a Masters of Arts degree in Health Journalism at the University of Indiana in the USA.

She worked for New Vision for a period of three years until 2013 when she went on to pursue her masters’ degree.

Joyce Nyakato struggled to get an air ticket because she had partial scholarship to go and study in the United States.

But she was determined and contacted some of her friends even when the money was not forthcoming.

She lobbied friends and relatives until she got an air ticket to go and study a master’s degree in US.

The family is now struggling to raise an estimated $10, 000 (about sh36m) to bring her body back home.

Let's help bring her body back to Uganda for burial.

The account number for this cause is in the names of ROBERT NYAIKA, Stanbic Bank Forest Mall branch, account number is 9030011077772. For more details call JUSTUS KAANA 0772405669/ 0701405669.
