UGANDA emerged athletics champions of this year's edition of the Brookside FEASSSA Games in Rwanda, after toppling rivals Kenya in the overall girls' category as the athletics event climaxed on Friday evening at Rwanda University Huye Campus grounds in Huye City, Rwanda.

The Uganda girls collected 9 Gold, 4 Silver and 9 bronze for a maximum of 22 medals, beating their Kenyan dominant rivals to second place with only 6 gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze for 19 total medals.

This was Uganda's first time beating Kenya in any category in the 14 year old games’ history, a result Uganda team coach James Mawa referred to as 'tremendous'

"This is a tremendous achievement for Uganda because for the first time, we are beating Kenya atleast in one category. The team was in high spirit and confident of making it, especially against their long time tormentors and above all, the moral was high in camp," Mawa said.

However, the boys still fell short behind Kenya, after collecting 4 gold, 4 silver and 10 bronze into second position behind the mighty Kenyans’ haul of 9 gold, 0 silver and 3 silver medals.

The top two were followed by improved Burundi, who had 2 golds in 10000m and 500m, to the surprise of many Kenya and Uganda runners, while hosts Rwanda managed only 2 bronze medals.

Ugandan girls' gold medals came from High Jump (Domidy Odong 1.55m), Triple Jump (Susan Aromorach), Short Put (Mercy Laker 10.01m), Javeline (Joyce Josephine Lalam 46.17m), 800m (Esther Chebet 02:01:01), 400m (Nabirye Nasiba 55.7), Discuss (Mercy Laker 36.46m),  4*100m relays (Maurine Banura 49:5) and 4*400m (Maurine Banura 03:54:07).

The boys collected the gold in 800m (Geoffrey Balimumiti 02:01:3), 400m (Samuel Oweka Saddam), 4*400m Relays (Sam Ekaju 03:22:9) and Discus (Odong Jakayo Bayo 36:75m).

In Netball, it has emerged an all Uganda semifinal affair, after all the four representatives St Mary's Kitende, London College, Exodus and Kibuli SS going through.

13 time winners Kitende, who led group A, will be taking on Kibuli SS while new comers Exodus face London College Nansana in the other semifinal on Saturday.

In Handball, Uganda's Kibuli and defending champions Lubiri SS led their respective pools into the semifinals where Kibuli is pitted against St Peter's of Kenya with Lubiri facing hosts Kigoma while in the girls' category, defending champions Gombe SS take on Rwanda's Apega but Mbogo High was eliminated.

St Mary's Kitende reaches their second semifinal in the girls basketball, and will be facing hosts LTD while Uganda other girls representative Nabisunsa Girls were eliminated, alongside boys' representatives Lubiri SS and Kibuli SS.

In Volleyball, defending champions St Mary's Kitende will be taking on arch rivals Malava of Kenya while the other semifinal will see an all Rwanda affair between Lusumo and St Joseph's while Uganda's other representatives Gombe SS and Luyanzi College failed to make it through.

Uganda girls football champions Kawempe Muslim were eliminated after losing 1-0 to ECOTEC of Burundi in their final Group A game on Thursday for only 2 points to finish second from the bottom.

Kawempe, had started poorly with two draws and Friday’s loss ensured the Ugandan champions are out of the event with no win, their poorest performance in the last five years.

The 2012 regional champions run short of their best performance that has seen them dominate on the Ugandan scene, including a maiden FUFA Elite Women championship few months ago.

Sandra Nabweteme, Kawempe's reliable striker, only score once in their 1-1 draw against GS Remere of Rwanda on Monday, but has since fired blanks.

But Citizen High played to a 1-1 draw against Kobala of Kenya, but still went out after collecting 5 points in four games

In boys' football, defending champions St Mary's Kitende qualified for the semifinals after beating Makongo of Tanzania 2-1 to make it 5 wins from 5 games and will take on Tanzania's Alliance while Masaka SS meets Burundi's Gitega in the other semifinal.

The finals and official closing ceremony are set for Sunday, with the teams departing to their respective home countries thereafter.
