Rwenzururu leader held over Kasese, Bundibugyo attacks

The 2nd deputy Prime Minister of Rwenzururu Kingdom has been arrested by security operatives in Bundibugyo district in connection with the attack that left 72 people dead on Saturday.

The 2nd deputy Prime Minister of Rwenzururu Kingdom has been arrested by security operatives in Bundibugyo district in connection with the attacks that left 72 people dead on Saturday.
Yeremiya Mutoro was picked from his home by security personnel in Bundibugyo district. Bakari Mugha, the Rwenzori region Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and said Mutoro is being detained at Bundibugyo Police Station.
The Rwenzururu Prime Minister, Noah Nzaghale, in a press statement, blamed the clashes on ‘bad elements’.
He said they could have taken advantage of the ethnic misunderstandings to launch their attacks.
“Bad elements could have used the misunderstandings as an opportunity for them to launch their atrocities because of the fertile ground that seemed to exist,” said the statement.

Recently, the Omusinga, Charles Wesley Mumbere Iremangoma, commissioned a peace team to foster peace and reconciliation between the Bakonzo and Bamba/Bawisi, following misunderstandings that arose from the recognition of the Obudingya bwa Bwamba (Bwamba Kingdom).
At the time of the Saturday’s attacks in Bundibugyo, some members of the Omusinga’s peace team were in Bundibugyo on a reconciliation mission.
Nzaghale said the kingdom was opposed to the function held by Banyabindi on Saturday. “As Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu we objected to this malicious claim because the Banyabindi were never targeted at all during the 1962-1982 fighting,” he stated.
