Court has barred the press from covering a case where a police detective is accused of leaking the now infamous Kayihura tapes to the media. Court says the tapes are a national security matter.
Buganda Road Chief magistrate Lillian Buchana has granted the order following a request from prosecution led by Lino Anguzu who asked court to not allow proceedings into thematter to be done in the presence of reporters.
Lino, who was ready with two witnesses to pin detective Ronald Poteli into stealing police tapes, told court that if the public and journalists were allowed to cover the proceedings and the leaked information is released to the public, it would cause tension between cabinet, parliament and police.
On request, magistrate Buchana ordered all proceedings to be done inside her chambers where only lawyers and the accused are allowed in.
Prosecution alleges that in March 2014 at the CIID headquarters in Kampala, Detective Poteli, being in possession of an official secret entrusted to him as a person holding an office of the government of Uganda, stole and leaked police tapes that had the Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura discussing political issues with different people.
