The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) plans to install 640km of water mains extensions across the country in the financial year 2014/15. This follows the extension of the corporation’s operations from 27 towns at the beginning of the 2013/14 financial year to 66 towns by June 2014.

In a letter to President Yoweri Museveni dated April 22, the water minister Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, committed NWSC to undertake 640km of mains extensions in 2014/15 and another 960km in the subsequent three years up to June 2018.

The commitments are subject to the payment of outstanding government arrears amounting to sh40b in 2014/15. This was discussed in a meeting between NWSC officials and the President on April 17.

According to Kamuntu’s letter, the meeting noted that while the Government is ready and willing to pay NWSC the outstanding arrears, NWSC had to commit itself to improve water supply.

According to the NWSC managing director, Eng. Dr. Silver Mugisha, the expansion drive is in line with the corporation’s objective of 100% service coverage by 2018.

The corporation will also rehabilitate water schemes in the 64 towns it has taken over since July 2013 and improve water supply availability.

NWSC has already started working on the six months (July to December 2014) infrastructure service delivery plans that will see at least 50kms of water mains extended in Kampala Water Supply Area.

The Kampala works will target supply reliability improvements and reduction of dry zones which receive little or no water. NWSC was recently voted the best water utility in Africa by over 500 water professionals in Cape Town South Africa due to its remarkable achievements.
