NRM youth leaders released on bail

KAMPALA - The Anti-Corruption Court has granted two NRM youth leaders that were remanded in Luzira Prison bail.

Adam Luzinda, the NRM youth leader for Kampala and his northern Uganda counterpart, Omodo-Omodo, were released Wednesday on a cash bail of sh5m each.

Charged with abuse of office, the duo appeared before the principal magistrate Micheal Lagara in a fully-packed court.

They were represented by lawyers Chris Bakiza, Severino Twinobusingye, Micheal Akampurira, Patrick Mugisha and Deus Sembuya.

Prosecution said the duo, without the knowledge and consent of the NRM party, fraudulently solicited for bribe, induced and tricked the party members and mobilizers into signing a petition to convene a delegate’s conference to challenge an NRM resolution reached in Kyankwanzi.

The case was adjourned until May 2 as investigations continue.

Lawyer Bakiza wondered why the two youth leaders were arrested when the investigations had not been completed.

Security was tight as the court as one needed an ID in order to be allowed through.

Present in the court were the NRM women's league chairperson Jacqline Mbabazi – the wife of the Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi – and Kabale NRM chairperson Hope Mwesigye, the former minister of agriculture.
