For five months, Dorothy Atim battled with the injuries she sustained when her boyfriend, Andrew Francis Obirai, poured acid on her.

By the time her relatives came to her rescue, she was groaning in pain while murmuring her ex-boyfriend’s name.

Atim, who was a sales representative with Vision Group based in Soroti, has been in the Mulago Hospital Intensive Care Unit. She died on Friday evening blind as a result of the acid attack.

The incident received a strong condemnation with the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Karooro Okurut, calling for stringent measures to be put in place to control the sale of acid.

Shortly after the incident Obirai went missing but later handed himself over to police and was immediately arraigned before courts of law charged with attempted murder.

According to police sources, the relationship between her and Obirai was not rosy and that she had opted to walk but her boyfriend would not let her go.

The two had met when Atim was in school and they had been together for over seven years.

At the time of the incident it is reported that Atim had moved on with someone else.
