THE development of women’s football in Uganda, is talking a fresh course from the original format in order to facilitate a quicker development process.

Mariam Kaliga, the FUFA official in charge of women’s football, had revealed that the new trend includes starting afresh by developing clubs right from the district level and then regions in order to create competitive clubs to form the national league.

Kaliga’s remarks were echoed by FUFA president Eng. Moses Magogo while on his first visit to Bushenyi district for the official opening of the District Women Football 2014 League on Saturday.

“We are starting on serious development of women football in the country and we want to first create a strong competitive base right from the grassroots so as to get good teams to form the national league,” Magogo said.

He reasoned that the national women football league (which has been the cry of every female player in Uganda), cannot survive without a strong foundation of clubs from the grassroots.

According to the new development plans, the districts will form district leagues and the best teams qualify for the regional leagues.

From there, the best clubs at the regional level will advance to the national league, just like how the men’s soccer league is organized.

While in Bushenyi, Magogo applauded the women football club managers for keeping the game up in the district and promised them support from the federation.

Bushenyi district is among the districts where women’s football is played in earnest with an annual league, just like Wakiso, Kampala, Jinja, Mpigi among others.

A total of eight clubs have registered to take part in this year’s league, reducing from 12 after former affiliate Rubirizi district got an independent DFA.
