Women Volleyball Cranes promise to improve

Women Volleyball Cranes captain Christine Alupo has urged her fellow players to step up their reception and their block ahead of Uganda’s last game at the on-going 2014 FIVB World Championship Group U qualifier Saturday.

Alupo pinpointed the techniques as their shortfall in the straight sets defeat against Tunisia on Thursday. Uganda was physically frustrated as they lost blocks and the hard services which they blamed on their sluggish approach.

“We lost because we were slow in response to blocks. We will need to be faster in blocking and adjust on how to receive hard balls. The girls are aware and everyone is saying we cannot go on like that,” Alupo said.

The Ugandan women are hard fighters and this can be substantiated by their recovery from two sets down to win 3-2 against Mozambique but Alupo insists pace remains their undoing.

Uganda had set eyes on a second place finish but with the defeat against Tunisia, Alupo conceded that it is only realistic for team officials to adjust and hope, at best, for third place in the group which has Kenya, Tunisia, Seychelles, Senegal and Mozambique.
