As first term kicks off today, Police have issued a chain of security alerts to schools and parents including one on an eminent terror attack on academic institutions.

Deputy Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said that in December Police received information that Al-Shabaab was planning to hit academic institutions.

“Based on that information, we want all the schools to put in place the necessary measures, like security guards, metal detectors and proper fences,” Onyango said.

He added that Police will do whatever it takes to prevent such an attack but asked academic institutions to play their roles.

“There shouldn’t be any gap in the school’s security fence which wrong elements can use to stealthily sneak into schools,” Onyango said.

Onyango made the remarks on Sunday while presiding over the awarding of Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) certificates to pupils of Seeta Parents in Mukono district.

The Police also warned parents and students about the increasing number of conmen operating in taxis and banks.

He advised parents to accompany their children to school and to ensure that they pay school fees in banks in their presence to protect them from the conmen.

Parents over the weekend started returning their children back to school for their first term.

Onyango revealed that Police have deployed on streets to respond to any security threats as students return to school.

He noted that the conmen operating in banks pretend to be helping students to pay fees in banks as fast as possible only to end up fleecing them.

Onyango added that there is a gang of conmen operating in taxis targeting students returning to school. “The gang members ask students for change and in return give them fake currency.”

He also asked school owners to observe the laws set by the Ministry of Education on firefighting; including reserving evacuation exists on dormitories. During the function Seeta Parents awarded sh300,000 to each of the four pupils who scored aggregate four in PLE.
