Karamoja region gets 200 handball teachers

Karamoja region will for the first time compete in a handball competition at national level after 200 primary school teachers received the basics in handball coaching.

The teachers were trained by the different instructors in both Kotido and Moroto after the region did not produce any handball team in the national games last year.

The Commissioner for Sports Omara Apitta told the teachers to help develop the pupils’ skills in their respective schools.

“We first subject all the competitors to a skill test and only those who pass this are allowed to compete. Our target is not primarily to get results but to have more skilled players who can play for the national team ten years from now,” said Apitta, while closing the training session at Moroto PTC last Friday.

UNESCO injected over sh150m in the training that was done in Moroto, Kotido and Gulu.

Moroto District Education Officer Paul Abaru asked the teachers to communicate with their head teachers so that their sessions on the school time tables are not allocated to other subjects as sports is a core activity.

He also advised the head teachers to buy at least two balls each to start the game, before appealing to the national federation for assistance.
