KCCA Football club’s Orange CAF Champions League preparations are being hampered by lack of funds.

With only ten days remaining to their away preliminary encounter against Sudan’s Al Merriekh, the Ugandan champions are yet to receive money from the city authority.

Club vice chairman Allan Sewannyana revealed that they have as a result failed to start a residential camp in Jinja.

“Blame it on bureaucracy in the authority. Football is not taken as a priority despite sh210m being budgeted. Its release has delayed,” said Sewannyana.

The money is supposed to cater for a training camp in Jinja, travel of a 25-man contingent to Omdurman and return, hosting of Al Merriekh and match officials.

Sewannyana explained that they opted for Jinja in order to access the nearby FUFA technical centre which has an artificial playing turf similar to the one that awaits them in Sudan.

KCCA’s situation is further complicated by a tighter programme that will have the two legs just seven days apart instead of the usual fortnight. The time has been shortened because of the upcoming World Cup.

“This short period is the very reason funds should be available well in time. We have to prepare for the away and home games at the same time,” explained Sewannyana.

Uganda will the same weekend also be represented by SC Victoria University in the CAF Confederations Cup. SCVU have in a bid to sharpen up for the forthcoming encounter, organised a friendly with a select side of Congolese players at Njeru today.

KCCA has opted for Namboole instead of their Lugogo home ground for their return leg. Namboole is also SCVU’s base meaning that KCCA could have their game on Sunday.

Nakivubo would have been the other option but CAF ruled it out. The continental body cited several buildings overlooking the stadium as a security risk.
