Budadiri West MP Nandala Mafabi is set to continue leading the opposition in the Ninth Parliament as the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) moves to clear the air over its current review of the general performance in the House.

FDC National Executive Committee (NEC), last week held a string of meetings over the issue, spawning speculations about the long anticipated shake up of its leadership in Parliament, with Nandala’s docket of Leader of Opposition (LOP) being of particular interest.

However, according to FDC spokesperson, Wafula Oguttu, the ongoing review which will be concluded on Friday will not affect Nandala and the party chief whip, although it might see the “reshuffle or demotion” of some committee chairpersons.

“Reviewing the leadership of accountability committees every after two-and-a-half years is mandatory,” Oguttu told journalists yesterday at the party headquarters.”

Last week, Oguttu said FDC is expected to submit the names of chairpersons of the four committees chaired by its MPs to Parliament before the House ends its long recess on February 18.

FDC has endured a torrid time since Dr. Kiza Besigye stepped down from the party presidency in 2012, with the acrimonious polls between Mafabi and Rtd. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, at one point threatening to split the party.

With furtive attempts at internal healing seeming to bear fruits, many political pundits contend that Muntu might be disinclined to rock the boat by dropping Nandala despite many reservations inside FDC about his abrasive leadership style.

Sources inside FDC indicate that there is a groundswell for dropping Nandala with party secretary general, Alice Alaso openly declaring her interest in the office, while some in the FDC top echelons quietly rooting for Cecilia Ogwal’s undoubted experience.
