Medical students were exposed during the National Games and Sports competitions for Health training Institutions in Uganda that kicked off in Jinja on Thursday with 35 institutions competing for this year’s Honours.

During athletics competitions at Kyabazinga Stadium, many athletes competed in races barefooted without spikes, which shows that these institutions don’t value sports and rarely have internal sports activities.

Many participants also fainted during the competitions, a sign that they hardly engage in regular sporting exercises for not only fitness levels but also for their personal health.

The competitions hosted by Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery include athletics that was held at the Kyabazinga Stadium on Thursday.

Volleyball, netball and football, also featuring, will be held at Jinja Senior Secondary School.

Safinah Museene, the Principal of Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery said athletic games conducted at Kyabazinga Stadium in Bugembe town council were a success despite a few incidents of athletes fainting.

“We had a successful event,” she said.

“These other issues of fainting were expected because these boys and girls don’t train daily like active athletes, but at least we had enough medical staff to arrest the situation.”

The competitions included javelin, short put, discuss, high jump, long jump and running – 200m, 100m, 3000m, 1500m – among others.
