THE Uganda national men’s volleyball team launched their campaign in the Africa FIVB Zone V World Championships qualifiers against Burundi with a straight sets victory at Amahoro Indoor stadium on Wednesday.
Uganda won the first set 25-21 and went to secure the second and third sets 25-19, 25-18 as Burundi practically surrendered to the same team in their second meet at the championship since July.
The win was not really a surprise to the team coach Anthony Ndawula, who even had the luxury of resting top players like captain Dickens Otim and his assistant George Aporu for most of the first two sets and still manage to win.
But Ndawula believes that his side’s encounter against Egypt today is one the matches to determine their progress in the qualifiers.
“We need to keep our focus to secure at least one win from the remaining matches,” Ndawula said after their opening match.
Uganda served first and secured set one 25-21 as towering veteran spiker Pierre Kamugasha, upcoming Savior Atama and national team returnee Emma Kato enjoyed flawless settings by Smith Okumu.
Uganda needs at least one more win to advance to the third round of the qualifiers and that result should come against Egypt on Thursday, Kenya on Friday or Rwanda on Saturday.
