The works and transport minister Eng. Abraham Byandala has inaugurated the Transport Licensing Board (TLB) and National Roads Safety Council for the period 2013 – 2015 with a call to members to ensure reduced carnage on the road.

John Mutenda is the new chairman for the TLB while Dr. Myers Lugemwa is the chairman for the National Road Safety Council. Byandala told the new boards at the ministry boardroom on Port Bell Road in Kampala to immediately start vetting drivers of buses used as public service vehicles and school buses in preparation for issuance of badges which will commence next month.

Although the exercise will begin with bus drivers, it will eventually include drivers of goods vehicles, mini buses, special hire vehicles and bodaboda riders. Vetting bus drivers is one of many interventions aimed at combating accidents.

Byandala said with only 49 licenced driving schools, the TLB should ensure that drivers applying for driving permit extension be fully scrutinised for quality.

Winstone Katushabe, the TLB secretary said all bus operators are now required to avail their drivers for scrutiny as a way of reducing incompetent drivers.
