Lukwago, Besigye still in detention

Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party president Dr. Kizza Besigye was detained by police overnight at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala.


Security sources have revealed that, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been move to unknown location from Nagalama Police station where he had earlier been detained.

Besigye was arrested by the Police on Tuesday afternoon and his car towed to CPS by Police.

According to Patrick Onyango, the deputy police spokesperson, Col. Besigye was picked for inciting violence along Ben Kiwanuka Street in the city centre while addressing supporters.

The Leader of Opposition (LOP) and other opposition legislators camped at CPS demanding to talk to Besigye but in vain as the police denied them access.

Besigye reportedly arrived at Kisekka Market on Tuesday afternoon disguised as a passenger in a taxi and started addressing the crowd of supporters.

Onyango said that from Kisekka Market, Besigye moved in his car waving to the crowds. When he reached at Kikuubo, along Ben Kiwanuka Street, his car was stopped and towed by police to CPS.

According to Onyango, Besigye had beaten security and began addressing an illegal rally in the city centre.

Security sources have revealed that, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been move to unknown location from Nagalama Police station where he had earlier been detained.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander, Andrew Felix Kaweesi said, “Lukwago was with the Police but did not disclose where.”
Lukwago was re-arrested on Tuesday by police on his way to the CIID headquarters.   Police said that Lukwago was arrested after he attempted to report to CIID headquarters where he had been summoned earlier.

Spokesperson Onyango said that the Lord Mayor was meant to stay at his home in Rubaga, and wait for police summons at the CIID headquarters in relation to charges of disobeying lawful orders.

On Monday, Lukwago was detained and spent the night in the cells at Nagalama Police Station after he was attested for disobeying lawful orders.

His arrest came after a tribunal headed by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire found him guilty of incompetence, abuse of office and misconduct.

Lukwago had wanted to address his supporters over the tribunal report which recommended changes to the KCCA Act that could see the next Lord Mayor selected among the five division mayors once Lukwago is impeached by councilors.
