National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is rehabilitating and expanding its existing sewerage systems in Kampala.

The NWSC managing director, Eng. Silver Mugisha, said the sewage works under the Kampala Sanitation Programme will increase the sewerage system coverage in Kampala from 6% to 15% by 2018.

He said the corporation is also planning to expand water production in Kampala from 190,000 cubic metres to 250,000 cubic metres per day to meet demand.

The expansion will soon see the commencement of construction of an eight million water reservoir at Namasuba.

Mugisha recently said the sewage treatment plant that is being built at Bugolobi will cost 46.6 million euros.

He also said the cost of rehabilitating and upgrading sewers within the city will cost 25.2.million euros.

“These works are expected to start early 2014 and will take 18 months to complete.”

Mugisha added that the corporation has also changed the material of manhole covers to plastic instead of cast iron that is often stolen by scrap dealers.

We are piloting the plastic covers in Makerere, Mulago, Kalerwe and Bwaise areas.

Mugisha said they are connecting 200 new customers free of charge to the new sewerage system in Lubigi.

NWSC sewerage manager James Maiteki said all premises within the city’s sewerage coverage are expected to connect to the new system or face legal action.

Some parts of the city have sewerage channels that have burst, putting city dwellers at risk of diseases.

Some residents around the city release sewerage into water channels whenever it rains, contaminating the environment.
