Police on Saturday shot dead a Chadian national who went on rampage stabbing three men, instantly killing one and leaving two others in critical condition.

The incidence which occurred at Kabalagala, a Kampala suburb, at about midnight also left a police officer hospitalised and a businesswoman hit by a stray bullet fired by a police officer.

Chronicling the incidence, Kampala Metropolitan police spokesman Ibin Ssenkumbi identified the Chadian as Ali Farouk Umar, a legendary traditional healer in Kabalagala.

It is alleged that, Umar had been surfing at Juice internet Café before becoming oddly violent. He reportedly kicked at furniture and electronics in the internet Café, afore dashing out to snatch a knife from a sugarcane vendor then seated near the premises.

Thereafter, Umar is said to have retreated to the stairs that lead to the internet Café sitting on the first floor. A mammoth crowd then gathered at the base of the stairs, awaiting what would follow.

Denis Okule, a police officer, reportedly curious to know why people had gathered, made his way to the front of the pack only to be hit on the head with a brick by Umar. Okule collapsed onto the ground.

Officers at Kabalagala police station then rushed to the scene and took Okule to Mulago national referral hospital where he is receiving treatment.

On seeing the officers who had come to arrest him, Umar allegedly climbed to the roof of the building and stood on a small elevation from where he starting pelting the on looking crowd beneath.

As police officers reportedly hatched a plan to capture Umar, some three men identified as Baker Bogezi, one Kiwanuka and one Tumusiime made a rushed attempt to arrest the suspect unarmed only to be stabbed and yanked down one after another.

When attempts to arrest Umar proved futile, a police officer shot him, killing him instantly. Police took his body to Mulago national referral hospital awaiting contact with his family in Chad.

However, one of the stray bullets fired by the police officer hit Grace Nabwama on the shoulder and she is said to be steadily recovering at Nsambya hospital where she was taken by police for treatment.

Bogezi, a veteran taxi driver passed away after sustaining the deep cut while his injured colleagues are nursing wounds at Mulago hospital.
