Indians donate to Kirinya inmates on Gandhi birthday

The Indian community in Jinja donate food items to inmates at Kirinya Prisons at Mahatma Gandhi''s 144th birthday.

The Indian community in Jinja on Wednesday donated food items to inmates at Kirinya Prisons as they were celebrating the 144th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

The activities to mark the annual celebrations included garlanding of Mahatma Gandhi’s statues with bright flowers at SDM temple along Bell Avenue and another at the Source of the Nile which are rehabilitated by Bank of Baroda. 

The chairman of the Indian Association East, North Sector, Chacko Babu said they handed over food items and cleaning materials to inmates at Kirinya prison and to blind pupils at Spire Road Primary School as they celebrated together with them.

“The Jinja community joined hundreds of Indians to celebrate the birthday of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, for the great work he did in the world at large,” Babu said.

Though there was a heavy down pour in Jinja on Wednesday morning, this did not deter the Indians from garlanding the statues before the team proceeded to Kirinya Prison.

Babu said: “We love to share with the people we live with in communities in Jinja that is why we have donated food items which include sugar, laundry soap, wheat flour, liquid soap, curry powder, salt and cooking oil to the inmates and blind pupils.”

Gaster Kizza, the Jinja district Prison Commander, said administration at the Prisons appreciated the support from the Indian Association in Jinja and in the Country at large adding that Indians were not only investors but are God sent people because they  offered many activities and support in Uganda including promotion of health services and education.

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2nd 1869 in Porbander of Gujarat State and it’s on this day in the month of October when his birthday is celebrated annually.

United Nation (UN) also celebrates October 2 as the International Non Violence day and Gandhi brought Independence to India through non –violence. India got Independence in 1947 after a long struggle of 100 years.

Gandhi started his carrier as a lawyer in South Africa. He is remembered for his involvement in the fight against apartheid and later he went back to India and started his struggle against British Colonial rule.

His ashes were immersed at the Source of River Nile and his statue was erected and unveiled by the then Prime Minister of India I.K .Gujral.

Bank of Baroda Chief Manager R.B.L Gupta, Managing Director of Nile Agro Magan Bhai Patel and chairmen of the SDM and Swami narayan Temples were also present at the function.
