TWO days after the Electoral Commission (EC) opened its gates for picking nomination forms by individuals interested in standing for presidency next year; the number of aspirants has quickly soared to 19 after five more contenders picked forms on Wednesday.

The five who picked nomination forms today include William Ntege, Samuel Mutatina, Rogers Anyako Ovoa, Dan Matsiko and Nkonge Kibalama.

According to EC's public relations officer, Jotham Taremwa, all the aspirants who picked nomination forms today seek to contest as independents, with the exception of Nkonge who is being fronted by National Unity, Reconciliation and Development party.

All the aspirants are expected to be endorsed by 1200 registered voters in different parts of the country, besides paying sh8m nonrefundable fee to the EC.

With the process still having more time to run, the number is expected to increase, with Taremwa saying the figure might exceed that in 2011.

Five years ago, 58 aspirants picked nomination forms although only eight fulfilled all the requirements by EC.

Among these included President Yoweri Museveni, Dr. Kiiza Besigye, Dr. Olara Otunnu and Dr. Abed Bwanika.

Former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, picked nomination forms on Monday indicating his intention to run as an independent candidate.

Nominations for presidential elections are scheduled for October 5/6, 2015, with elections in February next year.
