WITH his best years ahead of him, Uganda Cranes defender Ivan Bukenya has completed the best move of his promising career.

The 22-year-old has joined South Africa giants Kaizer Chiefs on a two-year contract with the option to renew. Bukenya broke through at Proline FC before joining Iraq’s Abril in 2011.

Now he is back in Africa and has joined a club that fell in love with the last Ugandan to play there. David Obua enjoyed three memorable seasons at Kaizer Chiefs, becoming a fans’ darling and the best player in South Africa for the 2006-2007 season.

Amakhosi confirmed Bukenya’s arrival tweeting: “Kaizer Chiefs would like to acknowledge the signing of the Ugandan International, Ivan Bukenya. We welcome him to the Family!”

The defender started training with the club on September 12 and has hailed the reception he’s received at his new home.

“I received a warm welcome from the players and everyone at The Village,” Bukenya told the club’s website.

“The captain [Itumeleng Khune] is forever happy and has been supportive. There is a spirit of love and peace in the team and I am looking forward to a great time here.”

Amakhosi football manager Bobby Motaung said: “We would like to welcome Ivan to the team. He is a quality player and has both defensive and midfield qualities.“He is a professional.”
