Olympic and World marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich has ruled out any possibility of trying to break the world record this year.

Should he decide to go for the record, Kiprotich whose personal best stands at 2 hours 7 minutes and 20 seconds, will have to dig deeper after his target was stretched on Sunday morning by Kenya’s Wilson Kipsang.

Kipsang broke the marathon world record after clocking 2 hours 3 minutes and 23 seconds in the Berlin Marathon. He beat Patrick Makau’s 2:03.38 times over the 42.195km race that he set on the same course 2 years back. Kiprotich, in an interview last week, said that he did not have a dream of setting a world record as it required more training and input.

“I am yet to dream about that. Maybe next year after some good training programmes. I might improve on the national record but that one (the world record) is still a faraway target,” said Kiprotich last week.

Kiprotich is currently in Kaptagat, where he is preparing to compete in the New York Marathon that is due in November.
