The Buganda Kingdom Lukiiko (Parliament) Monday paid tribute to Mzee Nelson Edmund Ssebugwawo, the grandfather to the Nnabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda.

Mzee Ssebugwawo, who died at the age of 104 on Sunday, was once a Buganda kingdom finance minister and one of the kingdom officials who fought for Uganda’s independence.

“Mzee Ssebugwawo served Buganda Kingdom very well, but above all he played a great role in the fight for Uganda’s Independence,” said Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro (Prime minister) of Buganda.

Speaking during the 23rd sitting of the Lukiiko, Mayiga told the Lukiiko that Ssebugwawo was a great family man who educated all his children for a bright future.

Mayiga noted that one of Ssebugwawo’s children, Dan Ssebugwawo, served the Kingdom as one of the Kingdom’s private secretaries.

“Mzee Ssebugwawo is an in-law of Buganda Kingdom; his son John Ssebugwawo is the father of the Nnabagereka of Buganda Kingdom. Mzee Ssebugwawo is our Muko (in-law), he is the one that led the Nnbagereka to lutiiko (church) during her wedding to the Kabaka,” said Mayiga.

In his eulogy, the Buganda kingdom Lukiiko speaker, Nelson Kawalya, described Mzee Ssebugwawo as a Buganda loyalist who he said the Kingdom will greatly miss.

Regarding the burial arrangements for Mzee Ssebugwawo, Katikkiro Mayiga said the Kingdom had set up a team headed by Buganda Kingdom speaker Nelson Kawalya to oversee Ssebugwawo’s burial.

According to Mayiga, the team which will work hand in hand with the family of Mzee Ssebugwawo will comprise of people like Denis Walusimbi (minister for information) Eva Nagawa (finance minister) and Dr Twah Kawaaso. Others are Martin Kasekende and Noah Kiyimba.
