KAMPALA - President Yoweri Museveni has called on other educational institutions to emulate Mengo Senior School's teachers in order to nurture great intelligent and morally upright countrymen and women.

This was in a speech read on his behalf by state minister for primary education John Chrysostom Muyingo at the school’s 120th anniversary on Friday.

Mengo S.S. prides in being the first secondary school in Uganda.

In his message, President Museveni said that the school’s products have been beneficial not only in Uganda but also across the world.

At a time when there are more calls for education, Mengo “has continued to make a social and economic impact to the country by offering direction and guidance to young Ugandans”.

“They have offered quality education through practical skills imparted to the students, team work and training the students with the required moral fibre,” read the president’s communication.

Museveni said it is such education background as Mengo’s that is needed for Uganda to compete with    developing countries in terms of skills.

He cautioned the teachers on the need for good values of the products of the schools.

"We need to show them that all their actions have future consequences.  Let the children live fully aware that HIV exists and let them respect themselves. The future of the country will depend on how you live today,” he said.

Mengo S.S. is a Church of Uganda foundation school under Namirembe Diocese and Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira noted that they have been nurturing children to make them responsible citizens.

He appealed to the teachers to understand what the season requires and take action towards that through their syllabus.

On his part, the school headmaster Fred Kazibwe noted that the decades-old institution had so much investment done in education but with 59 teachers (out of 149) not on the school payroll, they are left to spend so much in what should have been used in developing the school.

Former head teachers and students attended the celebrations, where the president donated sh15m towards the building of the new school library.
