Buhweju Woman MP Joy Arinaitwe Kariisa died Wednesday afternoon at Nakasero Hospital where she had been battling with a brain tumor.

According to her husband Eng. J.B Kariisa, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year and was flown to Apollo Hospital in India for treatment.

Although Arinaitwe looked well, the tumor reportedly returned and was flown back for another operation.

“She had the second operation in July but three weeks ago, she felt very weak and we rushed her to Nakasero Hospital where she has been receiving treatment until this afternoon when she passed on,” Kariisa said.

She is survived by two children aged six and three.

Arinaitwe becomes the fifth MP to die since the 9th Parliament started.

Her death follows that of Michael Oromoit (Usuk), Stephen Malinga (Butebo), Cerenah Nebanda (Butaleja) and Eriya Kategaya (ex-official).

Born in 1986, Arinaitwe joined Parliament in 2011. As a result of her passion for women issues, she served on the parliamentary committees of gender, labour and social development and that of public accounts.

Trained as a purchaser, she worked as a managing director, Ariko Capital Purchase (U) Limited before joining Parliament.

Her colleagues at Parliament have described her as a humble, friendly and hardworking MP.

Ephraim Biraro (Buhweju County) said, “Joy was a very friendly person who has died at a very young age. We will miss her.”

MP David Bahati said the late was a humble and committed member of the NRM Party. “It’s unfortunate that she has died at this time.”
