There is need to make Music Dance and Drama (MDD) a compulsory subject in order for pupils to develop their talents at an early stage, the Director of Basic and Primary Education Ministry of education and sports, Dr. Yusuf Nsubuga, said.

Nsubuga was speaking at the conclusion of a five-day National Primary Music dance and drama festival held at National theatre which ended on Saturday.

Over forty primary school choirs representing eighteen demarcated regions took part in this year’s Music Dance and Drama festivals geared at fighting malaria and violence in schools.

Mugwanya Preparatory school Kabojja won this year’s festivals and took shield after getting 877 points. They were followed by Busajjabwakuba with 873 points. Each school that emerged as winner in an item took home a trophy alongside a certificate for participation.

The festival event was dubbed: Effective learning for malaria-free children and zero violence in school and supported by Stop Malaria Uganda and SAID.

“I would advise all schools to participate in MDD festivals because it helps pupils to discover that they can make a contribution and also helps them to raise their self-esteem,” Nsubuga said.

Chief of Party Stop Malaria Project (SMP), Chilem  Mukwakwa, said that the project has empowered over 300,000 primary school pupils in several districts to promote the required positive behavioural change for Malaria control.

“Through this festival the primary schools have not only been a source of entertainment but equipped participants with knowledge to prevent and control Malaria and violence in schools, “She said.

She urged  people to take action and ensure that they fight Malaria by sleeping under treated mosquito nets every night.

Some of the represented schools from winning regions included Stella Maris Nsube, Mugwanya Preparatory school Kabojja, Star Education Centre and Kawempe Decorous primary school.

All the participating schools are articulating how to fight malaria and violence using solo piece, poems, creative, drama and traditional folk.
