President Yoweri Museveni has pledged a school bus to Moroto High School to ease the school's transport problems.

MOROTO - President Yoweri Museveni has pledged a school bus to Moroto High School to ease the school's transport problems.

He has also donated sh60m towards a fundraising drive to rehabilitate the school's premises.

The pledge and cash contribution were made by Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda who represented the President at the school's Golden Jubilee celebrations in Moroto on Friday.

According to a release from his office, Rugunda said that as a pioneer secondary school in Karamoja region, government is committed to supporting it to restore its glory as a centre of excellence in Karamoja.

"In the half century of Moroto High School's existence, you have not only existed but have also made a tremendous contribution to the community here and nurtured men and women who have served and continue to serve the country with distinction," said the premier.

Earlier, the school’s head teacher, Rev Fr John Bosco Kutegana said that the 50 years of existence were taking a toll on the school, with a need for repairs and renovation, a school bus, a girl's reading wing and recruitment of additional teachers.

 "The Ministry of Education is to undertake a human resource audit to establish the staffing needs of all schools in the country, with a view to recruit and fill the gaps,” said Rugunda later.

“For Karamoja region and other hard-to-reach areas, a special recruitment drive must be undertaken urgently to fill the gaps. The teachers required by Moroto High School will be recruited under this arrangement.”

The PM also hailed the First Lady and minister for Karamoja affairs, Janet Museveni, for "the dedicated leadership" she is providing in driving the transformation of Karamoja.

He said government deliberately and purposely established a special programme to address the development challenges of regions which were disadvantaged by history – such as Karamoja.

Rugunda explained that the focus of the Karamoja Program has been;

providing water for production and human consumption

initiatives for improving food security through the provision of hoes, oxen, heifers, improved bulls, goats and ox ploughs

improving livelihood and household incomes

initiatives have included support to health and education sectors

security and peace building

"As you know very well, without security and peace, no development and learning can take place," he said.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the state minister for Karamoja Affairs, Barbara Oundo Nekesa and state minister for mineral development Peter Lokeris.
