Ugandan fans attending the 28th World University Games had reason to smile as competitions in athletics started on day eight at the Gwangju World Cup stadium.

Ndejje University's Dorcus Ajok in the 800m finished second in Heat 4 with a season best of 2:04:70 in a tightly contested race that was won by Angela Kate Perry of New Zealand in 2:03:85.

The 22 -year -old, who has a personal best of 2:02:25, however wasn't excited, "the weather conditions today have really affected my performance, my muscles have been so stiff because of the cold. I could barely kick.

Nicholas Nsubuga, a businessman based in Seoul said, "I am happy to come and cheer my fellow Ugandans here; it's a great feeling when I see my brothers and sisters."

Team Captain and Makerere University student Godwin Byamukama fell short of a final place in the 100m after he tore a muscle in the semifinal. Byamukama who posted 11:00 seconds in the Heats, finished last in the semis with a disappointing 11:19 seconds.

Shida Leni another promising Ndejje student finished top of her heat in the Women's 400m and will be joined by Kampala University's Halima Nakaayi who also narrowly squeezed in having posted one of the best times in the heats.

"It's been a tight race, I expected to qualify but I need to improve on my time, Lamented Shida.

In Badminton, Team Uganda lost in the semifinal to Hong Kong in their classification game. Daisy Nakalyango who paired with Herbert Ebayo failed to match Yeung Lee Ling and Ng Ka Wai, losing 2-0 before Yakoub Musisi went down to Tang Ho Kan 2-0.

Female seed one Shamim Bangi failed to tame Yeung Hiu Tung as she also lost in straight sets 21-14, 21-12.
