A 58-year-old woman is in police custody in Tororo for allegedly taking part in the theft of a newly-born baby from Tororo hospital.

Rita Oyine, a resident of Kisole A village in Buteba sub-county in Busia district, is believed to have connived with an unknown person to steal a baby that had just been delivered by Jemina Alima of the same village.

Alima, who was referred from Buteba health center III, delivered Wednesday morning at Tororo hospital under the care of her mother-in-law Oyine.

The incident has puzzled the medical personnel as Alima and the relatives attempted to search for the baby without any success.

Oyine told the police that the baby was stolen by some women who disguised as medical personnel dressed in white dresses and gloves.

She added that one of the women bought them tea after the delivery thinking that she was a genuine midwife at the hospital.

Alima entrusted the care of the baby with her when she went out of the hospital to look for transport to return home but only to come back to find the woman has vanished.

Michael Odongo, the Malaba region police spokesperson confirmed the incident. He said Oyine was arrested to help the police with investigations into the matter.

Odongo said the police have launched a hunt for the suspects and appealed to the public to help with any information that could lead to the arrest of the culprit.
