KAMPALA - Nakawa High Court on Wednesday declined to grant bail to Kampala businesswoman Jacquelline Uwera Nsenga, who is accused of killing her husband.

Uwera, 36, was denied bail by High Court judge Wilson Masalu-Musene in Kampala. Her application for bail had come ahead of the case trial set for September this year.

Musene denied the suspect bail on grounds that she produced two unsubstantial sureties in court. The sureties include Henry Katanga, LC1 chairman Bugolobi flats and Albert Murari, director of Kenlloyd Logistics Limited – both cousins of the accused.

The trial judge said the suspect did not avail exceptional circumstances in her bail application such as gravity illness or advanced age.

“With one month the suspect has spent in prison, she has not been able to avail a medical report of her suffering from ulcers, chronic malaria and high blood pressure,” he added.

The judge added that the suspect would interfere with prosecution witnesses during trial and may abscond court if granted bail.

Standing in the dock, a puzzled look cut across Uwera’s face when Judge Musene delivered his ruling.

Uwera was apprehended from her residence on February 2 this year and taken into police custody until July 15 when she was arraigned in court, charged with murder, and later remanded to Luzira prison.

She was charged with the murder of her husband, Juvenal Nsenga Kananura, which occurred at their home in Bugolobi.

Prosecution insists the suspect on January, 10, 2013 knocked her husband dead at the entrance of their home.

Uwera, through her lawyers Nsubuga Mubiru and Isaac Walukaga, filed a bail application last month seeking her release pending the murder charge.

She is yet to appear this Friday at the Chief Magistrate’s Court for committal to High Court for trial.
