Government should increase funding to public universities and other higher institutions to promote quality education, the opposition Democratic Party (DP) has advised.

Party president, Norbert Mao, said the country’s per capita income depends upon the state of economy which is directly proportional to the literacy rate in any country.

He stressed that the economy largely depends on the able economists who formulate policies which play an effective role in the progress of the country.

“Competent people in different fields including economists and policy makers can be produced, if only a country has evolved an effective and viable education system. We all know that failed economic systems always affect all sectors including health, industry, agriculture, defence and many others,” Mao noted.

He stressed that weak education system means incompetent health workers who get degrees in medicine and surgery through back doors, saying that such people would not be able to serve the ailing humanity because of their incompetence.

Mao said the Government needs to improve the funding of the institutions on top of improving the remuneration of lectures and other public servants like primary teachers and health workers for better services.

“That is why we have a problem of brain drain and poor service delivery. People work under hard conditions. Let the Government curb corruption and cut the unwanted costs in some government institutions,” he said.

He said the budget of Makerere Univeristy has been dwindling over time despite the challenges faced by the institution.

Mao also noted that the recently passed Public Order Management Bill was discriminatory. “I have tried to hold rallies with the permission from police but always blocked at the last moment while our fellow members from the ruling party hold them freely at the same venues,” he said.

He said the Government should haveregulated political rallies but not to prohibit public gatherings.

Mao asserted that the law is already being implemented before being assented by the President.
