Hailstorms hit Bushenyi

RESIDENTS of Kyeizooba Sub County in Bushenyi district awoke to heaps of solid hailstone that were still piled up in most of the affected areas

OVER 2000 10,000 residents from 100 homesteads in Kibare ward Nyakabirizi division and Bwera village in Kyeizooba Sub County, Bushenyi district, were hit by hailstorm on Wednesday evening, which destroyed their crops and houses.

Resident awoke to heaps of solid hailstone that were still piled up in most of the affected areas and several children were seen playing in it.

Nyakabirizi Division district councilor’s Henry Mataze, told New Vision On Thursday that Kibare A, Kabare B and Bwera villages were the most affected. He said the affected crops included bananas, cassava, maize, mangoes and oranges.

Eva Turumu, the LCI chairperson of Kibare A cell, expressed worry that people are going to face severe famine and poverty. She appealed for government support of food and quick maturing seedlings.

Richard Tumuge a resident of the area said almost every family was affected and feared that they might not send their children to school come third term.

“We are worried. Almost every family in the affected area depends on bananas for income and food. I don’t think we shall send our children to school next term,” he said.

Afred Kibara the LC 3 councilor of Kyeizooba Sub County said that a similar hailstorm destroyed several crops and houses in the area last year.
