Over 10,000 farmers to attend agribusiness expo

Over 10,000 farmers from Masindi, Kiryandongo, Hoima, Buliisa, Kibaale, Oyam, Apac, Gulu, Nwoya, Lira, Nakasongola and other parts of Uganda are expected to attend the annual Agribusiness expo organized by East Africa Grain Council (EAGC) for the eastern region.

Over 10,000 farmers from Masindi, Kiryandongo, Hoima, Buliisa, Kibaale, Oyam, Apac, Gulu, Nwoya, Lira, Nakasongola and other parts of Uganda are expected to attend the annual Agribusiness expo organized by East Africa Grain Council (EAGC).

This year’s agribusiness expo is slated for 26th and 27th June and is the fifth of its kind.

It will be hosted at the Masindi District Agricultural Demonstration Centre - in Masindi district.

The expo serves as a platform for stakeholders of the agribusiness sub-sector to network and discuss demand driven service delivery in a wake to improve the agri-business sub-sector.

The two-day event will run under the theme: ‘Increasing food security and farm incomes through innovations, finance and technology.

According to a statement from the East Africa Grain Council (EAGC) this year’s event is expected to expose farmers to new and existing technology as well as financial services for agriculture.

Farmers will also be exposed to agro-business technologies through demonstration of equipment and good agronomic practices through live crop demonstration.

There challenge of post-harvest handling will be highlighted and farmers introduced to newly developed technology to curb the challenge.

“There are various existing post-harvest loss reduction technologies that have been developed in the past few years across all value chains. However the level of awareness and uptake of these technologies still remains low especially among small-holder farmers thus the need to bring these closer to the farmers through this expo,” the statement read.

The expo is the biggest agricultural business trade show attracting farmers from Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

Professor Zerubabel Nyira the state minister of fisheries is expected to officially open the two-day expo.

The Prime minister Dr. Ruhakhana Rugunda, minister of state for Agriculture Bright Rwamirama and minister of Agriculture Tress Bucyanayande are among the dignitaries expected to grace the event.
