MOSCOW: Nambawa to give it 100%

SHE has set herself lofty targets and should she achieve them, double African champion Sarah Nambawa will rewrite the national record books if she betters her personal best.

And with that, Nambawa is not looking any further than God for inspiration as she takes to the jump pit in the IAAF World Championships women qualifying round on Tuesday morning.

The America-based jumper who improved since going under the tutelage of Ghanaian Andrew Owusu her coach who took to facebook to pass on a brief prayer to Nambawa: “Please, Lord, renew my mind. Help me to give you 100 percent of the glory when I compete.”

Nambawa knows she will need some power, most especially if she is to make the cut as her season best stands at 13.88m, while her personal best is at 14.05m. She is expected to leap past the qualifying mark of 14.30m to advance to the final that is due Thursday evening.

But the double Africa back-to-back champion who also became the first Ugandan woman to win a field event at the continental stage is focused.

Nambawa who finished 6th at the IAAF Inter Continental championships, did not qualify for last year’s championships held in Daegu, Korea, and having spent one month training in West Africa, she believes that she can give it a good try this time.
