The Ministry of Education and Sports has ordered secondary schools to re-open.

The ministry’s intervention follows last week’s decision by district authorities and stakeholders to close over 44 secondary schools due to strikes.

According to an August 2 letter signed by the assistant commissioner secondary education, Uma Francis Agula, the head teachers have been ordered to arrange and re-open on August 12 without fail, and operate up to August 19, before the short break. The schools are also expected to start third term with the rest of the country on September 16.

In the letter, head teachers were cautioned not to charge any extra costs on the students.

“Each school must have a plan of how damaged properties can be replaced by the parents,” Agula directed.

Agula also directed the head teachers to make sure that schools have enough security to avoid a recurrence of the earlier unrest.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Affairs, Mary Karooro Okurut, has asked the Police and head teachers to investigate and apprehend students who led the strikes.

Karooro said it was unfortunate that some students are making their parents suffer added costs in replacing what was destroyed during the strikes.

The minister made the remarks last Sunday during a church service at Bweranyangi Girls’ Secondary School.

She hailed the students of Bweranyangi for not being among the schools that went on strike.
