The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has organised two regional championships ahead of their International events later this year. The concurrent events will be held in Mbarara at Kakyeka and Mandela Stadium, Kampala respectively.
UAF publicity secretary Namayo Mawerere told New Vision that through these regional championships the sport will promoted.
“The regional championships are meant to take athletics to the grassroot and in so doing, market the sport, spot and develop talent for national and international engagements,” Mawerere stated in a press release.
The regionals championships have also given chance to upcountry districts, clubs, schools, universities and tertiary institutions to showcase and expose untapped talent as well as providing opportunity for athletes to qualify for this year’s World Championships, Commonwealth Youth Games, World Youth Championships and All Africa Games.
This will also mark the fourth series of the annual athletics competitions organized under the auspices of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) by the regions of Busoga, West Nile, Western, Northern and Eastern.
Jinja and Adjumani last weekend hosted the first two series of the Kyabazinga and Mayank Championships respectively.
The annual regional competitions are also organized to help people in upcountry to have chance to watch at least national and elite Ugandan athletes in action.
