The two are Rev Canon George Bagamuhunda who was elected bishop of Kigezi Diocese while the Rev Canon Hannington Mutebi was elected the assistant bishop of Kampala Diocese.

According to a statement from church of Uganda, the names for the two Bishops were presented to the meeting of the house of Bishops of Uganda which took place on Thursday last week at Lwaza conference center where the two were unanimously elected.

“Rev. Canon George Bagamuhunda was elected to be the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi he will be consecrated on January 19 at St Peter’s cathedral, Rugarama Kabale,” announced Rev. Ntagali.

Since 2010 he has served as the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda. Prior to that, he served as the Coordinator of the Provincial Planning, Development and Rehabilitation (PDR) Department.

From 1992 to 2007 he served as the Director of the Kigezi Diocese Water Department.

“This is a humbling experience, I am committed to the advancement of the kingdom of God through preaching,” said Bagamuhunda.

Canon Bagamuhunda has also been the Chair of Kigezi Diocese’s House of Clergy for eight years, and is also the Chair of the Kigezi Diocese clergy pension fund.

On the other hand Rev. Canon Hannington Mutebi who was elected the Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese, will be consecrated on 10th November 2013 at All Saint’s Cathedral, Kampala.

The position of Assistant Bishop in Kampala Diocese fell vacant in June 2012 when Bishop Zac Niringiye retired.

Meanwhile, the conference also discussed ways on how church of Uganda can support its health organization Uganda protestant medical bureau (UPMB) for better health service delivery.

“We want to make sure that our hospitals under the protestant church are served well,” said Rev. Ntagali.

The executive director UPMB, Tonny Tumwesigye said the meeting with Bishops of church of Uganda was aimed at ensuring collaborative partnership for improved health services.

“We are engaging Bishops on how best they can support health facilities, 80% of our hospitals are in villages so we want to make sure that they offer better services,” said Tumwesigye.
