KAMPALA - The trial magistrate at Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court, Lillian Bucyana, is due to give her ruling on the bail application for Abbas Mubiru, the husband of local musician Stecia Mayanja.

The accused applied for bail on grounds that he had spent more than 48 hours in police custody.

Mubiru’s lawyer, Luyimbaazi Nalukoola, said his client has a “constitutional presumption of innocence.”

Mubiru, who is land broker, is accused of obtaining sh45.5m by false pretense from a man identified as Ronald Ddanze.

On Monday this week, he appeared before Buganda road Grade One Magistrate Joan Aciro during which he denied one count of the charge.

According to prosecution, 33-year-old Mubiru who resides in Katale-Bunamwaya in Wakiso district obtained the said money from Ddanze pretending that he was selling him a piece of land.

The land in question is allegedly located in Lubowa, Wakiso district.

This, according to prosecution, happened between October and November last year.

Meanwhile, police archives indicate that the accused man has previously been involved in controversies.

Records show that Mubiru was once arrested in Kitebi, Rubaga division after he reportedly failed to pay sh200,000 to a mobile money agent.

Andrew Ssekajoozi, the mobile money agent, told police that Mubiru ordered for a mobile money transaction to his wife Stecia Mayanja and a one Alex Katongole, but he did not pay the sum.

More information reveals that early this month, Mubiru was reportedly arrested by police in Bunamwaya for having failed to pay a debt worth over sh320,000.

In his bail application, Mubiru presented three sureties: Victoria Bukenya, Godfrey Ssebyala and Andrew Kayonga, a city car dealer.

Bukenya and Ssebalya are both dealers in mobile phones in Kampala.

They all tendered in photocopies of their LC1 letters, identity cards and passports.

Meanwhile musician Stecia Mayanja kept on hiding her face and did not attend the court proceedings, all the while depending on informers for updates on the goings-on inside the courtroom.

Later, she was seen driving away in an apparent attempt to escape from cameras.
