The Rev. Canon George Bagamuhunda has been elected the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi by the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda.

The House of Bishops also approved Rev. Canon Hannington Mutebi as the Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese.

He will be consecrated on 10th November 2013 at All Saint’s Cathedral, Kampala.

Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali, made the announcement at the conclusion of the House of Bishops meeting at Lweza on August, 2013. Bagamuhunda consecration will be on 19th January 2014 at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Rugarama, Kabale.

Because the Archbishop divides his time between provincial responsibilities as Archbishop and diocesan responsibilities as Bishop of Kampala Diocese, Kampala Diocese has traditionally also had an Assistant Bishop to assist the Archbishop in his diocesan responsibilities.  No other Diocese in the Church of Uganda has an Assistant Bishop.

The position of Assistant Bishop in Kampala Diocese fell vacant in June 2012 when Bishop Zac Niringiye retired. After Archbishop Ntagali’s enthronement in December 2012, he decided to take the first seven months of his tenure as Archbishop to pray about who God was calling to this ministry and to listen carefully to the people and leadership of Kampala Diocese.
