WITH barely a fortnight to the World Athletics Championships, Team Uganda coach Benjamin Longiros has set mental preparation as his priority.

“We have to ensure that the athletes are mentally at their best,” explained Longiros after a morning session of training yesterday in Kween district in the Elgon Mountains.

Longiros said part of his training also covers speed, strength, endurance and technique.

“Most of this physical bit is all about final touches because by this point everyone on the team is fit.”

Juliet Chekwel (10,000m) and Jacob Araptany (steeplechase) are based at the Kere District Training Institute in Kween while Moses Kipsiro (5000 and 10000m), Thomas Ayeko (10,000m) and Timothy Toroitch (steeplechase/10000m) are in Bukwo.

Ronald Musagala (800m), who 10 days ago became the last Ugandan to hit the Moscow grade, is training at Namboole under coach Raphael Kasaja.

Triple jumper Sarah Nambawa, who made the Moscow grade by virtue of being an African champion, will connect to Moscow from her base in Nashville, Tennessee.

The marathon trio of Stephen Kiprotich, Jackson Kiprop and Abraham Kiplimo is training in the Kenyan highlands in Eldoret together with Phillip Kipyego (5000m) and Benjamin Kiplagat (steeplechase).

The team, led by Uganda Athletics Federation head Domenic Otuchet, will leave in two batches. The first group that has eight athletes departs on August 6.

The marathon trio will depart on August 13th.
