Over 300 carefully selected Ugandans will on June 9 receive medals as the country celebrates Heroes day, Ofwono Opondo, the Government spokesperson has said.

Speaking to journalists today at the Uganda Media Centre, Ofwono said that during Heroes day celebration, President Yoweri Museveni will also unveil a monument at Dwanilo Sub County headquarters in memory of those who died in the Luwero bush war struggle (1981-1986), which saw the ruling NRM party capture power from the UNLA Government.

Heroes day celebration will take place at Katwe Primary School grounds, Karokora Parish, Dwanilo Sub County in Kiboga district—under the theme—Building Blocks for a better Uganda.

“Dwanilo was selected to host this year’s Heroes Day simply because it was the epicenter of the 1981-1986 liberation struggle that ushered in the NRM Government,”  Ofwono quoted a statement issued by Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister for Presidency and Kampala.

Ofwono said that all district officials have been asked by Government to postpone local activities for Heroes Day celebration and head to Dwanilo to attend the main celebrations.

According to Tumwebaze’s statement, the present heroes and those that have sacrificed their lives since the early 80s triggered Ugandans into reclaiming their lost authority by instituting democratic governance right from grassroots.

“The practice of electing local councils and committees from the village level upwards is a testimony. It is a foundational block of empowerment to citizens of this great country,” Tumwebaze said.
