A Ugandan-Pakistani Hasan Mumtaz has donated film processing equipment to Makerere University Printery that will be used to output films for color printing.

The manager printery, Joseph Kirabo, received the equipment worth over sh150m.

“We are happy about this development. We have been writing to different companies indicating to them the kind of help we need to enhance our performance towards serving the students’ needs. With this machine, the Makerere University Printery will save sh45m annually.

We will also add value to our production in terms of enhanced quality and timely deliveries,” said Kirabo.

For the last 20 years, Makerere has been lacking this equipment and they have been outsourcing the services to printing firms on Nasser Road.

Speaking to journalists, Mumtaz said that he donated to the University because he loves people who read and teach.

“I feel honored to be here, I love Makerere, and my heart is always here. My daughter studied communication from this University. Makerere is like a factory that produces high quality intellectuals and professionals who go out to serve in different capacities. I have decided to give you this equipment to teach and produce more intellectuals,” said Mumtaz.

Mumtaz, a former chairman of the Pakistan Society of Uganda, came to Uganda in 1983 and has educated some of his children from Makerere University.

Meanwhile, following increased terror threats targeting academic institutions, President Yoweri Museveni has offered sh1b towards the construction of a perimeter wall around Makerere University main campus.

“We are organizing a Convocation conference on May 30th as part of our road map to register all former students of Makerere to fundraise for the building of the perimeter wall. We are calling upon all alumni to come and be part of the launch this Saturday.

We need sh6b and the president has pledged sh1b and we request him to follow up on the pledge,” said Dr. Tanga Odoi, the chairman Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA).

Odoi called upon Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikiro of Buganda who has experience of fundraising to join them because he has just concluded a successful ‘Ttofali’ project.

“We are glad the Katikiro is an alumni, he should come to our rescue to see that our security is tightened”
