The Government has postponed the unveiling of the new secondary schools curriculum that was meant to kick-off this financial year, over lack of funds.

State minister for higher education Chrysostom Muyingo said implementation had been postponed to the next financial year. This is because the education ministry failed to secure sh24b this financial year.

“We had requisitioned for sh24b to train teachers on implementing the curriculum, but it was not allocated. That means we shall implement it next financial year,” he explained.

If the new curriculum had been implemented, secondary schools would start to teach only eight subjects, instead of the 49 subjects under the current curriculum.

Muyingo said under the new curriculum some subjects had been scrapped, while others had been merged.

He observed that despite the reduction in the number of subjects, no teacher would lose their job when the new curriculum was implemented.

“The number of subjects will reduce, but all our teachers, including those whose subjects will have been scrapped, will be retained,” Muyingo said.

He also noted that Religious Education (RE) was not dropped `under the new curriculum, because it is crucial in grooming good and responsible citizens of the country.

He made the remarks during the confirmation ceremony of 380 students from seven secondary schools in Mukono Municipality on Thursday.

The function, which was held at Seeta High School in Mukono, was graced by the Bishop of Mukono Diocese, James William Ssebaggala.

The Bishop appealed to students who received the sacrament to remain firm in their religion.
