10 cheat death in collapsed Kampala building

A five and ten-month old babies are among the ten survivors of a collapsed building at Nakivubo Mews in the busy down town Kampala Street.

KAMPALA- A five and ten-month old babies are among the ten survivors of a collapsed building at Nakivubo Mews in the busy down town Kampala Street. The building was under renovation.

The victims were rushed to Mulago Hospital in critical condition. Police and the Hospital administration had not yet identified the victims by Monday afternoon. The victims include three women, two babies and five men.

The building is located on Plot 4/2 Nakivubo Mews is said to have been built in the early sixties. It housed a store for clothes, two shops, a restaurant, a salon and tailoring section.

 According to the deputy Fire Brigade Chief, Hassan Kihanda, the building collapsed at around 10:45 am while constructors were trying to renovate the ground floor of the two-storied building.

 “The constructors were breaking some walls for expansion when the upper floor collapsed. They removed all the support pillars which caused the accident,” Kihanda said.
